Autumn Rose Williams, Shinnecock

A member of the Shinnecock Nation in Southampton has been crowned Miss Native American U.S.A. 2017-2018. Autumn Rose Miskweminanocsqua ("Raspberry Star Woman") Williams was the first contestant from New York in the sixth annual pageant, which was held in Mesa, Ariz., on Saturday.

Ms. Williams, 24, wanted to spread the message of indigenous women’s empowerment, according to a statement from the Miss Native American pageant. Her platform focused on identity, connection to culture, balancing tribal and national societal values, and encouraging one another.

“Learning about the multitudes of indigenous communities is an important part of empowerment, unity, and education," she said in a press release. "I felt that tonight, and it was powerful.”

“It’s still sinking in,” Ms. Williams added. To be a contestant in a national pageant had been a dream of hers since she first attended one, she said.

Miss Native American U.S.A. is a graduate of the Ross School in East Hampton. She holds a bachelor of science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, and is a marketing and communications assistant at the Peconic Land Trust, based in Southampton.

She will lead the grand entry this Labor Day weekend at the Shinnecock Powwow.
